PISCES AND JUPITER: EXPANSIVE IMAGINATION, EMOTIONAL DEPTH, AND LIVING WITH PURPOSE

If you would prefer to listen instead of read, you can learn more about Pisces and its ruler, Jupiter, on my podcast episode here

In Hellenistic astrology, Jupiter was the ruler of Pisces, so, in this post, we will explore Pisces through the lens of Jupiter. Pisces is the water, mutable, nocturnal sign of Jupiter (Sagittarius is the diurnal, fire, mutable sign of Jupiter). Nocturnal signs (earth and water signs) are of the Moon, as the Moon is nocturnal, and like to go inward, reflect, and be more behind-the-scenes.

As a water sign, Pisces is creative, intuitive, a dreamer, imaginative, deep feeler, sensitive, and needs to escape into their fantasy worlds, which are vast. Venus is exalted in Pisces, and we can learn more about the signs not just from their domicile ruler (in this case Jupiter), but also from the planet that is exalted in the sign, and so in this case that is, Venus. Venus represents art, creativity, beauty, love and relationships. Pisces has a highly creative and artistic quality to it that it gets from Venus being exalted there. The symbol of Pisces are the two fish, and this represents Pisces as a mutable sign, which means changeable, adaptable and flexible.

There's a fluidity to Pisces that I think is also symbolized by the two fishes, and by its mutability and watery nature. Pisces does not like to be defined or confined because Jupiter is boundless and expansive. It's fluid and wants to flow. It has a fluid identity, and does not like to be put in a box. This is also part of its creativity. There are a lot of creatives, artists and performers that have prominent Pisces in their chart, whether they're Pisces Rising, Sun, Moon, or Venus, Mercury, or if their midheaven/MC, then the person is highly creative, artistic, and might be a performer (whether they’re onstage, in front of the camera, or on a microphone (like a podcast host). There’s a lot of musicians, actors, and poets that have prominent Pisces, and artists in general.

Pisces, as an intuitive and sensitive water sign, has emotional depth and intelligence, however this doesn't necessarily mean though that all Pisces have developed their emotional skills. Older soul Pisces who are committed to growth will have higher emotional intelligence. Pisces that has learned how to develop their intuitive and psychic skills will have high intuition and psychic abilities. All the water signs have this quality because water absorbs. They absorb other people's emotions, the energies around them, and have the strong ability to mirror people. This is another reason why a lot of actors have prominent Pisces in their chart.

Pisces will mirror you because of their water and mutability. When you get together with your Pisces friend, they're probably mirroring you, and you're seeing that side of them. You're seeing the side of them that is mirroring you and is trying to meet you where you're at because they are connected to your emotions, energy, and sensitivity. And, if you are that Pisces mirroring, then you probably have the experience of showing different sides of yourself to different people and aligning with the energy in the moment.

Pisces can adapt itself to any environment and mold itself into anything. It also often feels the weight of the world in its heart and soul. Thus, one of the lessons and struggles for Pisces is learning boundaries. Because Jupiter is boundless and expansive, boundaries are something that doesn't come as naturally for Pisces unless one has strong Saturn, Capricorn or Aquarius in their chart (although learning how to implement helpful boundaries is a lifelong practice for all signs, really). For Pisces, learning boundaries for their emotions, and the energy they pick up from other people, is essential support for heir sensitive nature.

There's a spiritual quality to Pisces that comes from Jupiter. Pisces tends to be more of the spiritual side of Jupiter, whereas Sagittarius deals a little bit more with the religious side. Not that all Sagittarius are religious, but there tends to be more of an association with religion. Spirituality is broad, but for Pisces, things need to be meaningful and purposeful. A Sagittarius would say, what does it mean? And Pisces says, is it meaningful?

Pisces wants to know, is it meaningful? Is it purposeful? And, if it's not, then they don't want to have anything to do with it. For Pisces, things can't just be intellectual, they have to feel aligned emotionally and spiritually. Experiences need to be emotionally and spiritually fulfilling. With Pisces, everything needs to have a deeper purpose and meaning, and feel emotionally purposeful and fulfilling.

There is a wisdom to Pisces because of being ruled by Jupiter, and it being the last sign of the zodiac. As the last sign, there's a connection with endings, a reflection of endings in one's life, endings in life in general, and what is moving on to a higher realm. Pisces is connecting with something higher, beyond our physical selves and beyond the mind. Aquarius is the sign that comes before Pisces, and Aquarius deals with the mind, the intellect, but with Pisces, it’s the intuition and connection with the spirit world. There's also a grief that can come with Pisces’ connection to endings that makes them more equipped to hold space for death and dying. Pisces is interested in the spiritual, the emotional, and connecting more with life and our soul beyond the physical experience.

Pisces has a different way of working, and often works best in seasons. It can have an inconsistent nature with its watery mutability, and, so it’s best to work in spurts and in seasons, and show up whenever Pisces is able to show up (unless Pisces has some strong Saturn in their chart that makes them incredibly consistent). Not everyone needs to (nor can) show up with the same consistency and at the same frequency all the time. That is a message we get from ableism, capitalism, white supremacy, and patriarchy. Pisces might have a harder time working a nine to five or a day in and day out kind of job because they need freedom, flow, and flexibility.

With its creative nature, Pisces needs daily outlets of escape, whether that's watching a lot of TV or movies, playing video games, or reading novels. Pisces needs to enter different, imaginative worlds on a regular basis. Everybody does that to some degree, but some people need it more, and Pisces needs it more than most. Of course, there can be challenges to that because some people's escape doesn't serve them well, so there's different escapisms out there. There’s different ways this shows up for people depending on the person and their birth chart.

There's a dreaminess and a dreamlike state and quality to Pisces, and a need to dream and fantasy. If you have Venus in Pisces, for example, you might be highly romantic and fantasize a lot about your dream relationship. Pisces’ imagination is vast like the ocean, and they are able to tap into a fantasy world and enter higher states of consciousness more easily. Jupiter is also the bigger picture and Pisces is able to see the bigger picture. Pisces is in touch with the consciousness of humans, the spiritual world, the soul of humanity, and the bigger picture of humanity.
