SCORPIO AND MARS
Scorpio is one of the most misunderstood zodiac signs, but let’s explore what this sign is all about.
Scorpio is a water, fixed, nocturnal sign ruled by Mars. In Hellenistic astrology, Mars rules Scorpio. Modern astrology has Pluto ruling Scorpio because, in essence, when the “modern” planets of Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto were discovered, astrologers thought that they needed to rule signs as well.
So, modern astrologers assigned Pluto to Scorpio because they saw Pluto as having more in common with that sign than others. And, while, I do think Pluto and Scorpio have some things in common, I use the ancient rulership system because, in short, it’s a more sophisticated, balanced system that I find to make more sense and be more accurate. When I started to see Scorpio through the lens of Mars instead of Pluto, I better understood this zodiac sign.
Mars also rules Aries, and both Scorpio and Aries are known to have an intensity about them. This is because of, Mars. But, their intensities are different. Aries is a daytime sign and Scorpio is a nighttime sign. Scorpio is nocturnal, and nocturnal is more reflective, secretive, quiet, and lurks behind-the-scenes. Aries is a speedy, spontaneous fire sign that’s more expressive on the outside, whereas Scorpio is plotting behind the scenes with a piercing intensity that can strike when you least expect it.
Both Aries and Scorpio can be fiercely loyal and protective, traits of Mars. Mars is cunning, defends, and protects. If someone is attacking you or saying bad things about you, and you have a Scorpio on your side, then they will come to your defense and try to protect you.
Mars is a truth teller. Both Aries and Scorpio speak the truth. Scorpio can detect bullshit from miles away, and they will unearth the truth and call people out if necessary. Mars is passion and intensity, and with Scorpio as the water sign of Mars, Scorpio has that calculating, quiet intensity that pierces when the opportunity presents itself.
As a water sign, Scorpio is very sensitive and intuitive. Scorpio’s sensitivity can go unnoticed because Mars doesn’t show vulnerability easily, but Scorpio feels A LOT. The sensitivity that the water signs have to offer is a sacred gift. Scorpio’s gifts are not for everyone, but if one has the honor of receiving the loyalty and intuitive sensitivity of a Scorpio, then it's a beautiful experience.
Scorpio is particular about who it interacts with because it is a water sign. Water signs reflect and absorb other people's emotions and energy, so they have to be particularly deliberate about whose energy they are around, and who they let into their space.
Not every Scorpio is in touch with their intuitive gifts, but they have them nonetheless. Plenty of Scorpios are aware of their psychic gifts though, and are using them in their work and life. Scorpios can make excellent healers because they have powerful, intuitive gifts that detect truth.
Since Scorpios are good at being secretive, and uncovering the truth, they can also make great spies, detectives, and anything that requires strategizing and stamina. As a fixed sign, they have endurance and staying power. They're good at seeing things through and being focused on what they're passionate about. Scorpio can have an obsessive quality to them as well, which is a quality of Pluto, and it’s also a quality of Mars.
Scorpio gets the stereotype that they’re dark and sexual. Some are classic goths while others are simply able to hold space for the darkness of life. Mars does represent a lot of darker aspects of life, and it’s not that Scorpio is dark in and of itself, but that it’s more aware of the more challenging aspects of life because of Mars. Mars also represents sex, so this is one reason Scorpio has gotten the sexual stereotype, but Scorpios are not more sexual than other signs. However, they might be able to hold more space for the sexual realm.
Mars is a maverick, a rebel that needs to do its own thing. Scorpios live life their way and do their thing, and are often unapologetic about it. It's not necessarily always easy for them, but Scorpios are focused on doing what they are here to do. You can't tell Scorpios what to do or try to manipulate them. They're going to speak the truth and do what they need to do. Mars wants to be free, and Scorpio is interested in being liberated from what isn’t theirs and what doesn’t serve them.
