CANCER: THE SIGN OF HUMANKIND, THE NEED TO FEEL AT HOME AND LIVE A ROMANTIC LIFE
Cancer is the giving of life. It’s ruled by the Moon, which makes life habitable, so Cancer is the sign of inhabiting life in a body here on Earth. Cancer is the water, cardinal, nocturnal sign of the Moon. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, so the sign of Cancer has these Jupiterian traits as well as traits of the Moon. Jupiter is life-giving, just like the Moon and Cancer.
Astrologer, Adam Elenbaas, said, "Cancer was called the gateway of mankind. Capricorn was called the gateway of the gods."
Katie Ellen Hazeldean from their website, True Tarot Tales, expands on this ancient view of Cancer being the gateway of humankind and Capricorn as the gateway of the gods,
"Neoplatonic Chaldean philosophy said that while the souls of those about to be born descend to Earth through the constellation of Cancer, the gate of the summer solstice, obviously in the northern hemisphere, arriving in the star cluster known as the beehive cluster, the souls of the newly dead return to the cosmic sea ascending through the gate of the gods, the star gate of Capricorn."
I think this quote captures the essence of Cancer and Capricorn (I share more about Capricorn in another post) in a way we don't often think about. In this deeper spiritual sense, Cancer is associated with the birth of humans, and the Moon ruling Cancer is associated with birth, with "mother," with creation.
So, Cancer, as Adam Ellenbaugh shared, is the gateway of humankind and says, "Cancer is the entrance of spirit into matter, into the material world. Cancer was thought of as the creation of the universe or the cosmos. The Moon is the body, and so Cancer then is the spirit entering the body. How do we live a life in a body, in a world that we're meant to get immersed in while not losing touch with the ground of our being of eternity?"
This is what Cancer is teaching us. How to live a life in a body. How to be a spiritual being in a human body. The Moon is our body. Cancer is the spirit entering the body. Cancer reminds us that part of our spiritual experience is experiencing what it's like to be in a human body on this planet, Earth.
Adam goes on to say, ""How do we live a kind of romantic life that's able to see with appreciation and awe the patterns of eternity? It's about spiritually staying connected and somehow at home as a spiritual being in a material body. And it's also about living a human life where one of the most important things is that we feel connected, nurtured, and supported emotionally, that we're here to live a relational existence. Cancer is always teaching us how to stay connected through sweetness in life and bonded, how to create safety and connection, how to feel at home in the universe."
It's tough to be a spiritual being in a human body and feel at home here on Earth when we old souls with social justice values cannot comprehend the enormity of violence inflicted in this world. We need to tap into Cancer. We need this deep nurturing and feeling connected to one another, to our bodies, to our emotions, and our source.
Cancer is a romantic sign, this watery, intuitive sign ruled by the Moon reminding us to have a romantic connection with life. Cancer call us to fall in love with life, to fall in love with each other and live a romantic life.
Cancer Wants To Feel At Home
The Moon and Cancer have a strong connection to home, body, environment, nurturing, and the “mother”. Cancer gets us in touch with our body, in touch with the source of life, and feeling safe, physically and emotionally. It needs to feel at home somewhere. It's looking to feel at home. On a deeper spiritual level, how do we feel at home in this human body on this earth? It’s difficult to live here in this human body on this earth. How can we feel at home?
Ruled by the Moon, Cancer is focused on creating a nurturing space where it and its loved ones can thrive. Cancer isn't just concerned with itself and it’s closest people feeling at home, but it wants everyone to have a home and feel at home. Cancer wants humanity to thrive, to be well, for all humans to have everything that they need.
The Moon represents our needs and well being, and, thus, Cancer and the Moon are concerned with your well being. Are you well-fed? Are you well- hydrated? Are you clothed? Are you feeling okay? Do you have your basic needs met? But, beyond the basic needs, how are you feeling? Are you feeling okay, right? Cancer wants to know. Cancer is concerned with this. The Moon is concerned with your emotional and physical well being.
Cancer reminds us that sensitivity is a strength. Sensitivity is awareness. It's sensing, it's feeling. Cancer pays attention to things that many miss. As a water sign, Cancer feels, it senses, it absorbs. This is why it deeply craves boundaries, something it can learn from its opposite sign, Capricorn. Opposite signs witness each other, have qualities in common, and are able to meet some of each other's deepest needs (more on this in another post). Cancer needs strong parameters, protection, security and dependability (all things it can receive from Capricorn) in order to be at its best.
Cancer Needs To Create
Cancer is a cardinal sign, and cardinal signs are the starters, they need to create and to create new things on a continuous basis. With this cardinal energy combined with the water element and being a nocturnal sign ruled by the Moon, you can see more of why and how Cancer is the sign of human life, it's that cardinal starting of LIFE. But, not just with human birth and humanity, but giving life in a lot of different ways, it’s birthing new creations of ALL kinds. Cancer is creative, it has an incessant desire and need to birth new creations, to bring things into existence as part of embodying our creative spirit.
